The Langshaw Name: Its origin
The family name, as I understand it, originates from Scotland. Interestingly enough there was a story in my family that there was an agreement between two families to end a dispute that the family's should marry together. Ending the disupte and uniting themselves under one banner. The family crest strangely enough depicts a union of two familys. The family motto, Ne Cede Maus Sed Contra Audientor Ito, translates as Yeild not to evil, but rather go on more boldly. since first posting this site I have had some interesing comments on this and one in particular would indicate a Lancashire origin, The is an interesting section in the research folder which would point very nicely towards this Lancashire theory, howevr my own family tre seems to have come to a grinding halt around Manchester in Lancashire in 1777. However the families blazon of arms does not appear to be irregular and from what I can find this is the most common blazon of arms for this name. Others are connected to abbrievieations of the name and I cannot see that they are related to this particular name.
The family blazon of arms depicts a unicorn with a hunting sable between two esquires helmets (of the first family, the unicorn depicting the second) Typically this indicates the union of two family's. The crest depicts a helmet with five paling piles verticle and four garts of gold. In the armoured hand is a schimitar. The colours Gold and blue predominently indicate Purity, Valour & truth respectively the Unicorn indicates virtue and courage.
